Possess this mix!

Recently I turned another year older, and to celebrate the occasion I decided to give the gift of hard dance to you. Thus was born Incrementer, a mix that goes through pretty much every flavor of 145 bpm I have (industrial dance, EBM, hard trance, hard house, tech dance, hard electrik, hardstyle, you name it). The goal here was to play some tracks that I’ve wanted to play but have not had the chance to as well as to make an energetic mix that was full of fun.

So why the name Incrementer, and what does that ++; mean in the artwork? Well, one of my degrees (and most of what I do for a living) is computer science (programming), and the ++ operator on a numerical variable is the shorthand way to increment it by 1 and then save the result as the new value of the variable. The semicolon (in many programming languages) denotes the end of a command, so with another year going by, age++; And now you know! :P

Two years ago I uploaded my first recorded mix to the web–a freeform hardcore mix by the name of Critical Error 00. I’m not just being humble when I say that it was awful–I had a long way to go in my technical skills, and I did not have a good grasp on EDM track structures, beat matching, phrase matching, or even what a key was and why they’re important. But it was a start.

Last year I released the second mix in the Critical Error series, and, while it was heaps better than the last one, it still had its fair share of stumbles and mistakes. It has been a VERY active year of mixing since then, and that leads us to the next installment of this anniversary mix series: Critical Error 02.

This is a 175 bpm driver of a mix that starts off nice and easy with some drum & bass, then kicks it into gear for an assortment of freeform that is mostly from some of my favorite (but lesser known) artists. It was a blast to make, and I hope that you enjoy the end result! Who knows what next year’s mix will be like… :)

Ever since I started getting into EDM (and especially industrial, EBM, and future synthpop) I always had a soft spot for the harder, more aggressive sounds. At first this manifested primarily with industrial, but then eventually I discovered gabber and, just a short while later, hardstyle. As I’ve been heavily mixing hard dance the past many months I’ve wondered more and more how much industrial and hardstyle could mix, testing that with my demo mix first. That went fairly well, so I decided it was time to step up to a full mix that could be a proof of concept.

And that’s how this 145 bpm stomper came about. When Audio Attacks is more aggressive than my usual mixes, and even some of the transitions seem to have been affected by this attitude. Normally I strive for very smooth, almost imperceptible transitions–even better if there’s long periods of the two tracks overlaying and creating something new. Some transitions fit that mold here, but there’s several that are very deliberate and meant to be a change in gears for the next section. Hopefully it’s still a pretty smooth (well, as smooth as you can get for these genres) ride over all. And don’t think this is just a fluke…I have PLENTY more where this came from, so expect to hear more combinations of these two in the very near future. :D

If you follow tech dance at all you have probably noticed that there have been a TON of awesome tracks that have come out lately, and even a whole new record label (Diablik and Oyaebu’s Rave Me, which is going to be one to watch!). After picking up a handful of these gems (and having a backlog of ones that needed to be mixed) I just had to do something with them.

The result is Hard.Dirty.Tech, a 140 bpm mix that pounds away with plenty of filth to spare, and a bit of a darker departure from my past few mixes. Not that this is a bad thing at all. :) It might be a little rough around the edges as it was arranged and recorded in one night on an impulse, but it’s still an enjoyable and very danceable listen.

Trance, especially vocal trance, is one of the genres that initially brought my attention to EDM. From there I dove deeper and deeper into different styles and genres, but the structure and feel of trance will always hold a soft spot in my heart…I just wish it wasn’t usually so slow, ha. So when I discovered hard trance I immediately fell in love with the genre, but for some reason I didn’t mix it much after the first hard dance mix or two I recorded.

Well, recently I’ve gone back to hard trance and the fire has been re-kindled. Thus enters Energy Overdrive, a 20-track driving monster with plenty of energy, epic builds and breakdowns, a lively tempo, and even a sense of humor. It’s also the longest mix I’ve recorded yet at 82 minutes and some change!

I had a blast making this mix, but there’s still a huge backlog of tracks that I wanted to use (and new ones being released all the time), so expect to hear many more hard trance and hard dance mixes as the year goes on. I’ll be honest, All Tech’d Out And Nowhere To Go ended up being a bit darker and harder than I anticipated, and instead of leaving me satisfied with a full-length hard dance mix I found myself itching to show off some more fun hard dance tracks. And that’s how Groove Funktion came about!

Groove Funktion is a 145 bpm mix that lives up to its name. It has a wide variety of sounds present, but the overall theme of “play something fun” carries through. There’s remixes of tracks you’re sure to recognize, a couple of older tracks, and, of course, plenty of more recent stuff.

What I wasn’t expecting was for this to become one of the best, if not the best, mixes that I’ve ever recorded (mainly because it was put together on an impulse and a short time frame, ha). It was so much fun to work on, and I really learned a lot about improving my transitions through this mix. So what are you waiting for, go get your groove on! :D

Over the past 2-ish years I’ve really fallen in love with hard dance. It has a great amount of energy without being too fast for most people and it has such a diverse range of sounds. In that I constantly find myself drawn to the hard, techy beats. So I decided to put together a mix that heavily featured tech dance, and after I came up with the punny title I just had to follow through. :P The result is a 140 bpm mix with a fairly aggressive edge to it:

Last, but not least, in this batch of fresh new demo mixes is a fusion I was hesitant to try at first. Not because they don’t go well together, more because I had tried mixing them shortly after I started mixing and determined that industrial and EBM was just beyond my reach at the time. Fortunately, that’s changed. After recording the hard trance demo I decided to play around with my industrial collection a little, found that I was actually able to mix it, and then also noticed how several of the tracks sounded very much like hardstyle. A little bit of experimentation later, and this mix is the result. A harsh, stompy romper that is first in the line of many more like it to come!

Download 2012 Industrial und Hardstyle Demo Mix

Third in the fresh new demo mix set is a relentless hard trance set. A good portion of my electronic roots stem from trance, so hard trance was one of the first areas I gravitated towards in the hard dance arena (but, for a time, didn’t mix as I became more interested in hard house, tech dance, and hardstyle). Coming back to hard trance was so much fun–I definitely want to play more of this! The energy is just amazing, and the epic quality of many of the tracks just puts a big ‘ol grin on my face (and makes it impossible to sit or stand still).
